Strengthening the conservation of the newly established population of Goitered Gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) in the transboundary area of Azerbaijan and Georgia

With the support of Fondation Segré  through IUCN Save Our Species, WWF Caucasus Programme Office rolls out the supporting activities   to protect the Goitered Gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) in the transboundary region of Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The Goitered Gazelle is globally classified as Vulnerable (VU). In Azerbaijan, it is listed in the Red Book as a species living on the edge of its global range and at risk of extinction without targeted protection. In Georgia, it is currently recorded as extinct, but ongoing reintroduction and restoration efforts are paving the way for reassessment.

The initiative supports the ongoing project by focusing on three key areas: contributing to monitoring and research to better understand population trends and distribution, mitigating pressing challenges such as drought and water scarcity that pose serious risks to the recently reintroduced and still vulnerable gazelle population and engaging local communities and stakeholders to raise awareness and build lasting support for long-term conservation of the species.

The ultimate objective is to establish a self-sustaining population of Goitered Gazelles in the Azerbaijan–Georgia border region by creating favorable  conditions for their survival.
