Artificial Water Holes Arranged to Support Goitered Gazelles in Samukhi Protected Area

Since the inception of the Gazelle Reintroduction Project in Georgia, the population of Goitered Gazelles(Gazella subgutturosa) has been on the rise on the Samukh Plain. However, despite this positive trend, efforts are still needed to support the establishment of the self-sustaining population. Recognizing the importance of creating a favorable environment for these species, a project was initiated to address the scarsity of the water.

During the monitoring process, the need to create a permanent resource of drinking water for Goitered Gazelles in the Samukhi Plain was identified. Based on the mentioned needs, a solar power plant and corresponding infrastructure were arranged near the Iori River channel, which automatically provides water supply from the river channel to the five-kilometer long water system and three reservoirs located in different places in the Nugzar Zazanashvili Samukhi Multipurpose Protected Area
This project was implemented by the WWF Caucasus Programme Office, with the active involvement of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and the Agency for Protected Areas and with the financial support of the Wildlife Adaptation Innovation Fund (WAIF/WWF-US).
The activities were carried out in coordination with the Akhmeta Municipality City Hall, Nugzar Zazanashvili Samukhi Multipurpose Protected Area Management Department and other relevant local stakeholders.

We extend our gratitude to the administration of protected areas of Vashlovani, the Agency of Protected Areas, and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture for their invaluable assistance throughout the project's implementation.
